Bathroom Redesigning with Tile

Changing the look of your bathroom can impact the overall feel of the room, taking it from just a functional room to a fabulous mini-getaway spot in your home. One way to do this is with tile. Not only does it provide the ideal water resistant wall covering around showers and baths, but it can also be an integral part of making your bathroom beautiful.

There are two basic types of tile typically used for bathroom design, ceramic and porcelain. That is not to say that those are your only options, but they are the most common, making them the most affordable–the more exotic the material, the higher the price of the project. This is something to keep in mind, even if you are saving money by doing it yourself, because there will be a cost involved.

Both ceramic and porcelain have a reputation for durability, but there are some differences to be aware of.

Ceramic Tile:

  • Rated based on hardness, which helps in determining its suitability for wall versus floor use.
  • Chipped or cracked ceramic tile cannot be repaired, and must be replaced.

Porcelain Tile:

  • Difficult to cut due to its density, but this also serves to ensure its durability.
  • Requires a special compound for setting, which can differ based on manufacturer.

Both ceramic and porcelain are low maintenance, being easy to clean in the bathroom. Neither really requires specialized cleansers. Both are non-porous which means they resist mold and mildew. Any issues with mold and mildew will be with the grout, which you will see as the typically white lines between tiles turns black if neglected.

Once you decide which type of tile you will be using the next step is to decide on color and design. Tile can be arranged into patters to enhance the beauty of your bathroom. Patterns can be geometric in arrangement or more organic. It all depends on your creativity or that of your designer. It is also possible to choose a few highly stylized tiles with designs of their own to use as accent points among a group of tiles of the same color.
